As patients mature and age, their skin’s ability to bounce back diminishes which causes fine lines and wrinkles to appear more prominent. Most patients will see their first lines and wrinkles around the eyes, mouth, and also the forehead. However, as we mature and age, these lines and wrinkles will start appearing all over the face and will also become more prominent.
Collagen and elastin is what gives the skin its smooth appearance and ability t bounce back when stretched. As our bodies get older, we slowly start losing the ability to build more collagen and and our elastin infrastructure starts breaking down. Therefore, when we age, our skin becomes more fragile, more wrinkle prone, and more sagging in appearance. Although these changes are natural, there are certain factors that can speed up the process. Poor diet, excessive sun exposures, constant dehydration, and alcohol consumption are a few examples that speed up this process. Hormone imbalance may be another factor that can speed up the process, especially after the age of 30.
Patients can take take control of their skin health by adopting a few preventive measures.
Reduce excessive sun exposure. Too much sun is one the main culprits in early signs of aging like wrinkles and dark spots. Our bodies only need about 20 minutes of direct sunlight every day to obtain it’s vitamin D requirements.
Reduce alcohol consumption. Alcohol behaves like a toxin in your that can lead to inflammation. Consuming alcohol in frequently does not pose a risk, however, patient should be weary of frequent alcohol consumption or daily alcohol consumption.
Rest and exercise. Many patients overlook the importance of proper sleep and exercise, which has been shown to increase longevity of patients.
Patients with fines lines and wrinkles can access a wide range of medical interventions depending on the severity. Dynamic lines that not yet creased can be softened by using neurotoxins like Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin. These medications work by relaxing the muscles and preventing the wrinkles from ever forming. Laser treatments can also work by stimulating collagen production over time. Some of the more invasive treatments include fractional laser, collagen induction therapy, and thread lift procedures. The type of treatments that your skin will need will highly depend on the the severity of the fine lines and wrinkles.
