Intrinsic Aging

Intrinsic aging occurs because of our genetics and because of time that passes. As we age, our skin and our bodies lose fat tissue which gives can makes us lose the full profile that we love. Our skin also experiences some thinning of the skin and buildup of surface cells that make us look a little older and makes our skin look slightly dull.

As patients age, they may also experience a slowing of collagen, elastin, and glycosaminoglycan production. These 3 components are crucial to maintain the structure, the bounce, and the elasticity that our skin has. Over time, less nutrients are delivered to this components and they tend to lose those qualities we cherish.

Everyone experience intrinsic aging. However, the rate and effects and which we experience It highly depends on a person’s genetic backgrounds. It is common to see people with different types of ethnic backgrounds experience different rates of aging.

Extrinsic Aging

Extrinsic Aging is aging that is caused by outside factors. 85% of visible signs of aging are said to be preventable. The following is a short list of some of these outside factors.

  • Sun exposure
  • Unhealthy living
  • Pollutants
  • Chronic inflammation
  • Gravity (Short of living on the moon, we cannot prevent gravity.)

When we are over exposed to these factors, the crucial structures of our skin break down. Dehydration, wrinkles, and sagging skin are just a few of the signs of extrinsic aging. Excessive sun baths can cause the thickening of our skin and can give us a leathery and coarse look to our skin. One of the most common manifestations of over exposure to the sun are dark spots on our face and even on our bodies.

The breakdown of our skin and its signs do not happen overnight. They can take several months or even years for your skin to show the signs of over exposure.

If you have already seen these signs on your skin, there are effective treatments that can help improve the look of your skin. We recommend that patients take the time to research what treatments will be ideal for them. It is also very important to keep in mind that most treatments will take time and careful commitment to get the desired results. Finally, be aware that we cannot turn the clock back completely on our skin. But that does not mean that we cannot improve the appearance of our skin today.
