Acne is challenging skin problem that not only causes pain, discomfort, but can also make us feel self conscious about the way we look. Treating acne is another challenge of its own because there is no "silver bullet" for this disorder and the causes can be from multiple sources.

Four main causes of acne:

  • increased keratinization within the follicle
  • increase sebum production
  • proliferation of Propionibacterium acnes bacteria
  • inflammation

Anyone who has had acne knows that it presents itself in many forms. The following are some of the more common presentations of acne.

Hormonal acne: This type of acne is experienced by many adolescents and is commonly seen with an an excessive amount of sebum production.

Acne cosmetics: When your skin is exposed to irritating ingredients on a daily basis, then the skin will tend to breakout. Some common substances include laundry detergents, certain makeup, and certain hair products.

Bacterial acne: A common cause of bacterial is the over production of anaerobic bacteria within the pore. Since this kind of bacteria does not need oxygen to flourish, a clogged pore can lead to this overproduction

Systemic acne: This kind of acne may appear in various places of the body like your arms, face, back, and legs. Disease, illness, medication, and diet related issues can make someone more prone to this type of acne.
